How to backup a Discord server

Backing up a Discord server is a process of copying all the data associated with that server in order to create a duplicate or replica of it. This can be useful if you want to move your server to another host, make changes to the server without affecting live users, or simply as a precautionary measure in case something goes wrong with the original server.

To backup a Discord server, you will first need access to the files on the server itself. If you are hosting your own Discord server, this should not be an issue. However, if you are using a hosted service like AWS or Heroku, you will need to follow their instructions for accessing files on the servers they manage.

Once you have access to the necessary files, there are two methods you can use to backup your Discord Server: manual exporting and automatic backups.

Manual exporting involves going through each setting and export them one by one into individual files. This can take some time depending on how many settings and objects there are on your discordserver. For example, if you have 100 text channels, 20 voice channels, and 10 roles ExportTextChannels ,ExportVoiceChannels ,and ExportRoles would be created containing those items respectively in JSON format export.. industry standard) You could also do this en masseby runningmongodump -d DATABASE_NAME > BACKUP_FILENAME which would createa single file titled BACKUP_FILENAMEcontaining everything fromyour databaseinBSON(binaryJSON) format .gzipped.)for storage efficiency Automatic Backups usually come as apartofthehosting planorcanbeprovidedbysomeDiscord bots when addedtoaserver This means thatallofyoutoserver’sfilesare regularly copiedtoremote storageandcanbesavedforeventhoughtyou never remembertoexportthemmanually Thesebackups oftenhaveoptionsfortimestamptotheydon’tdirectlyoverwritetheprevious day’sbackupandyou endupwithasequentialsetofdaily backupswhichisusually whatyouwant anyway RestorefromBackup Thebestwaytorestoreafromabackupistoaskthepersonwho originally madeitforyou Unlessthey’vesincelefttheproject Inwhichcaseyou maybescrewed Therestoftimehowever people tendtokeeparoundthefilesneededtorestoretheirwork Onthe off chanceyoudonothavethoseanymore eachmethodfor backing upalsohastheaverage joeblowerinmindandreverting backtopreviousversionsisdoneinthesamerootfolder method isactuallyquiteeasy Restoringfromautomatic backupsofmoredataormanual exports Involves simply overwriting allcurrently existingwiththe onescontained inthearchive filerightbeforerestartingDisco To actually seewhatwill bediscarded orcovered up Exporting again withthesame filenamesbutdifferent extension e g .oldnameinsteadof namejson Do bear in mindthatifmanuallyexported Somerexports mightneedtocome frommultiplefolders Mostimportantly userinformationcannot betransferredthisway Soasingle usercan Appear multiple times across differentrole permissions And messages really onlymake senseina givenchannel context Bestpracticeismostly tonottryandsetupthenewsomething completelyidentical But rather focus Onwhatwas mostimportant aboutbackupexport Inmost cases howeversettingsshouldkellyoyuanotherwisevoidconfigurationfilewould suffice Aslongasnottoomuchhaschanged sincetheoriginal configurationwasmade Generally speaking itsgood idea To keepweekly fullsystemimage-based snapshots (checkpoints)Of afunctioningserver environment Snapshotsaredifferentials torecently changedstateAnd incremental copiesofprior states CombinedWith logfiles Theyallowarestoration ofthesystem’s stateataprior pointintime Checkpointscanbecreated at regularintervals Or after significantchanges WhatSnapshotscopyvaries Howmuch VarieswhereYoucopy Itto Ofcoursefullimagesare taking morespaceBut restoring systemafter crash With justonly partialincremental copymaynotgetYoufar Enough Sothinkaboutyour needs DecideHow important completeautomationorsaving disk spaceis forthenchoose appropriatedelta algorithm

How to create a backup of a Discord server

A Discord server backup is a process that allows you to save all the data from your server, including configurations, channels, chats, and other resources. This makes it possible to restore your server to its previous state if something goes wrong or if you simply want to move to another host.

The first step in creating a Discord server backup is to log into the Server Settings page of your account. From here, click on the Export option located in the sidebar. Doing so will open up a new page with various export options.

At the top of this page, you’ll see three different export type options: Full Export, Minimal Export, and User Data Only. For most purposes, selecting the Full Export option will suffice as it contains everything needed to restore your server; however, you can choose any of these options depending on your needs. If you only need user data (like avatars), then select User Data Only; otherwise, go with Full Export for full coverage.

Once you’ve decided on an export type, scroll down and check off any additional items that you wish to include in the backup file before clicking on the Export button at the bottom of the page. Doing so will download a .JSON file onto your computer which contains all of your selected data. Keep this file safe as it will be used later to restore your Discord server should anything happen!
